PURAN POLI

Puran poli is a classic Maharashtrian delicacy. It is a pan-griddled bread stuffed with split yellow gram. It has various regional names like paruppu poli in Tamil, Holige or obbattu in Kannada, ubbati in Konkani. The taste also varies from region to region. It is sweet and is circular like a parantha. It is a festive dessert. The stuffing is called and puran and the parantha-like bread is called as poli.

Traditionally, puran poli is served on special occasions like Holi, Ganesh Chaturthi, Gudi Padwa and Sankranti. They are also served at traditional weddings.

It is served hot with ghee and milk. In many regions, this is also served with a tamarind flavored tangy soup called Katachi Amti. In the konkan region, it is served with sweetened coconut milk.

Puran poli is high in calories but majority calories are contributed by the carbohydrates. A healthier version can by made by substituting jaggery with some no-calorie sweetener like sucralose or stevia
