Pelmeni are the Russian equivalent of the Chinese dumplings. It originated in the Ural region in Russia. They are particularly good means of quickly preserving meat during long Siberian winter, especially eliminating the need to feed livestock during the long winter months.

Pelmeni consist of a filling wrapped in thin unleavened dough. The dough is usually prepared with flour and water, sometimes eggs are added. The filling is usually a beef , chicken or pork or a mixture of different types of meat, spices are also included. It is exclusively savoury unlike the variant types of dumplings in the world and the dough is exceptionally thin. The filling is uncooked before stuffing it. It is cooked in boiling water.
There are many regional variants available in the country. It is also found as a frozen food in Russia and Ukraine.
