A koeksister is a traditional South African sticky donut treat. It is deep fried and coated with sugar and is drench in syrup containing cinnamon, lemon and sugar. This delicious treat is perfect for lunch as well as breakfast. It is pronounced like “cook sister” and the originated from the dutch word “koekje” which roughly translates to cookie.

It is prepared by plaiting strips of dough to look like braids before deep frying it. After that it is coated with sugar syrup. It is incredibly crunchy from the outside and has a syrupy centre and they taste like honey.
It is exceptionally popular in South Africa and is considered as a special treat to be made for birthdays and other celebrations.
