Falafel is a Levantine and an Egyptian dish. It has become a common form of street food in the Middle East and is easily available in the world elsewhere. Fritters are a vegetarian version of a falafel.

It is a deep fried ball-shaped patty, made of ground chickpeas or fava beans or both. Herbs and spices are also added to the patty. Falafel is usually served stuffed in pita bread with a few vegetables so it resembles a wrap and is also served in a mezze platter. The pita bread acts like a pocket to place the falafel inside it, so these sandwiches are sometimes referred to as a falafel.
They are high in protein and carbohydrates and they make a perfect snack. I recommend trying a falafel whenever you are in the Middle East because you will not find a better version anywhere else in the world.
